Scientists visited the City from the Brevard Zoo, scouting appropriate sites for the potential future hosting of clams. By the summer of 2022, the Brevard Zoo plans to strategically plant 3 million adult clams and 5 million “seed clams” throughout the Brevard County portion of the Indian River Lagoon system, including in the Banana River. These filter feeders can greatly improve water quality by reducing excess nutrients and help restore overall areas of habitat. Sites reviewed today were areas of shoreline along the City’s Water Reclamation Facility and Manatee Sanctuary Park.
If you would like to volunteer your shoreline for this program or have other questions, visit the Restore Our Shores webpage to find out more. The Brevard Zoo is still actively looking for host sites. Clam hosting would begin in November 2021.
