The City of Cape Canaveral is taking part in a program to map COVID-19 across the US.
Biobot Analytics, headquartered in the Boston area and founded at MIT, is the first company in the world to commercialize data from sewage. Biobot has become a global leader in wastewater epidemiology and their mission is to transform wastewater infrastructure into public health observatories. New studies show that SARS-CoV-2, the virus causing COVID-19, is shed in stool. Data from wastewater can help communities and scientists with the following:
- Measure the scope of the outbreak independent from patient testing and hospital reporting
- Track the effectiveness of interventions to help predict flattening of curve
- Provide an early warning for reemergence (if the virus has a seasonal cycle)
Laboratory Manager Jessica Bunnell will be working with Biobot to submit samples and obtain data. The City is hoping our data will help officials navigate the continuing recovery of our community.
